Event 2: Color Light Motion

The second event I attended for the quarter was the Zoom conference “Color Light Motion” hosted by Victoria Vesna. I chose to join this conference due to its interesting title and with further research, I became very curious to hear from all the different artists and scholars with their contributions to cybernetics. I felt this was a perfect event to get a deeper understanding of the relationship between art and technology.

I have went to many museums, but I have not seen the arts of cybernetics, which led me to find out more about it. Cybernetics was a new topic but after research and the conference, I learned it was the art of system communication (Jones). The conference focuses on the works of Wen-Ying Tsai and cybernetics as a whole. Ryszard W. Kluszczynski gave a wonderful presentation on the key topics of the meeting. The presentation covered many of the works of Wen-Ying Tsai and understanding how he expressed his art to the world, although there are problems of people not giving him credit for establishing such artworks (Kluszczynshi).

The best part of the conference was the talks of Wen-Ying Tsai's son, London Tsai, giving a personal and closer look at the artist's work. London has dedicated his life to his father's work of the “Tsaiberntic” (roboticart). The exhibit shows “how an art process is passed down through generations” (roboticart). London gave a very notable speech about how his childhood was filled with learning about his father's works. He also added a very important statement about how his father could have been a bigger artist but sacrificed the glory to focus on family (Tsai).

In the end, the works of Wen-Ying Tsai established the foundation of cybernetics making it easier to understand the art + technology relationship for the class exams. The main takeaway is that people should focus not only on contemporary works but also on those who pioneered them. Overall, the conference was long but kept my attention the entire time with the promotion of cybernetics especially with Jasia and her school of cybernetics to start the new generations (ANU). Her school website is a great website to help people get to know the topic and how society is transitioning to cybernetics (ANU). I would rate the conference with a 10/10, with all the guests, especially Professor Vesna, moving and creating a wonderful conference that allowed those who don't know what cybernetics are to understand.
